WCF 2010 World AC Team Championship

WCF Media Release
27th December 2009

Invitations to compete in an expanded World Team Championship (WTC) have been sent to all WCF Member Associations that do not form part of the MacRobertson Shield event.

The event will be held in August 2010 in England simultaneously with the last week of the 2010 MacRobertson Shield at The Hurlingham Club in SW London, the Compton Club, Eastbourne and Sussex County Croquet Club, near Brighton.

It is expected that Tier 2 will be divided into upper and lower divisions consisting of four teams each of four players playing three two day Test Matches on a round robin basis.

Tier 3 will consist of a single division played over 4 days with a format to suit the overall final entry.

Tiers 2 and 3 will end on Saturday, 21 August in order to allow competitors to take part in a combined closing ceremony for everyone involved in the WTC after play has ended in the MacRobertson Shield at Surbiton on Sunday, 22 August. This will be held at the All-England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club (Wimbledon).

Entries close on 31st January 2010 with named player notifications to be made no later than 31st March 2010. It is expected that details of tier allocations will be made on or about 15th April 2010.

Chairman of the WTC Organising Committee, Stephen Mulliner said, “I hope very much that all Member Associations will wish to take part in the first Association Croquet team competition open to all WCF Member Associations.

One of the key objectives of the World Croquet Federation is to promote the development of croquet internationally and one of the ways in which this is sought is by ensuring that every Member Association can send at least one representative to each individual World Championship. The World Team Championship now offers the opportunity to send four players to what we believe will be an excellent international event.”

Notes:

  1. This event will be the first WCF World Association Croquet Team Championship held since 2000, when a 14 point version took place in Milan, Italy. That event was won by Wales.
  2. The MacRobertson Shield (Tier 1) first took place in 1925 and is competed for on a three to four year cycle by Australia, Great Britain, New Zealand and the United States of America.
  3. The current holders of the MacRobertson Shield are Great Britain having won the event in 2006 at Rich River, Australia.
  4. The 2010 event will be the 20th Croquet World Series for the MacRobertson Shield.
