Maud Trainor (for whom this event is named) is a long-serving member of the South Brighton Croquet Club who also spent many years as the Canterbury Association Referee, and served a term as President.

The competition is a friendly 5-day tournament held for older players who seek the chance to get together with many of the croquet friends they have made over the years.
