Croquet New Zealand

Rankings

All players who take part in ranking (most level-play) tournaments are included in both world rankings and NZ rankings maintained by Chris Williams at his website. These are based on performance at ranking tournaments, with a minimum of 10 ranked games being played within the previous 12 months to appear on the list. Chris also operates an online database which is updated almost daily, and is mirrored at the WCF site: http://rank.wcfcroquet.org. A similar rankings system exists for Golf Croquet, and is maintained bt Stephen Mulliner at this website.

Chris Williams who maintains the association ranking list explains that "the ranking system was developed by Stephen Mulliner in the mid 1980s and uses a system similar to the Elo one in chess. A player gains and loses points after each game depending on who has won and the current indices of the two players. If a player beats a player on a much higher index then more points change hands than if the higher ranked player wins. Each event is given a weighting depending on its importance. In a top class event (eg, the World Championship) up to 6 points can change hands, whilst a lower class event such as a consolation one only 4 can do. Most events are 5 point events.... the system is objective and depends on the results achieved by a player and the standard of opponents. Lots of wins against opponents with low grades will not give many points."

Managers of all level-play tournaments are encouraged to email their results to chris at butedock dot demon dot co dot uk. Chris spends many hours maintaining the database provides an excellent and very fast service for the world croquet community, each year inputting thousands of results by cvs file or by hand, so contributors of results are asked to bear this in mind in sending in results and corrections.

Results from level-play golf croquet tournaments should be emailed to mulliner at ruralinternet dot co dot uk for inclusion in the world golf croquet rankings. A separate NZ rankings list is not kept, but can easily be read off the world information.
